Part of the Malvaceae family, these plants are known for their colorful flowers and are often seen in gardens to give a bright decor and attract butterflies. The petals come in a variety of bright colors, but the plant is typically known for its pinkish-red hue. Aside from their aesthetic properties, hibiscus has medicinal benefits. Its flowers and leaves are used to brew teas and elixirs that aid in lowering blood pressure, reducing fever, and calming an upset stomach.
Hibiscus can also be applied topically and provide rich nutrients and vitamins to heal and support the skin. Here are a few skin benefits from this powerful flower:
Boost collagen production
Hibiscus is rich in vitamin C and an antioxidant called myricetin which both aid in promoting collagen production. This helps keep the skin firm and taut.
Slows down skin aging
In addition to boosting collagen's production, hibiscus slows down the breakdown of collagen and elastin, another protein that keeps the skin firm. Hibiscus targets the enzyme that breaks down elastin production, ultimately slowing down sagging skin that comes as we age.
Exfoliates and brightens the skin
If you're looking to buff away dull, dry skin and brighten your complexion, turn to these tropical flowers! Hibiscus is a natural source of alpha hydroxy acids, better known as AHAs. Known mostly for exfoliating and boosting skin cell regeneration, AHAs are used in a gamut of skincare products, and are mostly synthetic. Hibiscus provides a natural, plant-based option for this powerful acid and helps with minimizing discoloration and acne treatment and prevention.
Studies have shown that when hibiscus extract was placed on skin wounds, it increased the production of fibronectin, a protein that helps wounds close.
Fights off free radicals
Free radicals are unstable atoms in our bodies that break down cells and lead to illnesses, disorders, aging, and inflammation. Antioxidant-rich hibiscus has high amounts of vitamin C and beta-carotene to combat free radicals. The flower also contains an antioxidant called anthocyanin, known for its anti-inflammatory properties. This combination of antioxidants joins forces to reduce the level of oxidative stress caused from free radicals, including inflammation and signs of aging.
